RHDV2 outbreak in Joburg
13 October 2023
Outbreak
The virus first appeared in South Africa late last year, but Gauteng seemed to stay out of the crosshairs. In the last two weeks, however, reports came through of rabbits and hares dying in alarming numbers in the greater Joburg area. We are talking about one property that lost 68 rabbits in a few hours, another where a mass grave is being dug. It is like scenes from an apocalyptic film.
Where does that leave rescues?
Rescues will now need help more than ever. They normally receive donations when they are out and about, saving bunnies and posting it on socials. With this virus, though, they cannot risk cross-contamination and must isolate. Which means funding will dry up. Thing is, they still have bunnies to feed and medical bills to pay.
Where does that leave ARC?
We will continue to support various rescues through fundraising initiatives. Watch our socials for more details.
What can rabbit guardians to?
- Vaccinate your bunnies ASAP. Thanks to Critters SA for compiling a list of vets that can vaccinate.
- Practice strict biosecurity measures.
- Report any dead hares/rabbits to the State Veterinarian.
What can the public do?
- If you know of anyone who have rabbits, please forward this information and convince them to vaccinate ASAP.
- Keep donating to your local rabbit rescue.
- Participate in ARC’s fundraising initiatives.
- Contact your local rescue or ARC and ask what we need in terms of hay, greens, or pellets.
- Support your local volunteer who is going through an ordeal of note.
