    Outbreak

The virus first appeared in South Africa late last year, but Gauteng seemed to stay out of the crosshairs. In the last two weeks, however, reports came through of rabbits and hares dying in alarming numbers in the greater Joburg area. We are talking about one property that lost 68 rabbits in a few hours, another where a mass grave is being dug. It is like scenes from an apocalyptic film.

    What can rabbit guardians to?

    • Vaccinate your bunnies ASAP. Thanks to Critters SA for compiling a list of vets that can vaccinate.
    • Practice strict biosecurity measures.
    • Report any dead hares/rabbits to the State Veterinarian.
